Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Huari / Wari culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A well-painted vessel in the form of a standing jaguar with a wide, cylindrical spout rising from his lower back. He stands on four round legs, with ears back and a mouth full of fierce, bared teeth. White, red, brown, and black pigment give him a wonderful texture. Size: 7.65" L x 3.35" W x 7.2" H (19.4 cm x 8.5 cm x 18.3 cm)

The spots painted on the sides of the vessel's body are some of its most interesting characteristics - they are unmistakably the markings of a jaguar, giving some naturalism to the animal. The jaguar was associated with power in the Andean cultures from the Chavin culture ca. 900 BCE onward, and the Huari were no exception.
