Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Huari/Wari culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A smooth, round, brightly-painted ceramic canteen with repeated chevrons encircling the neck and hanging down from the shoulders. Painted below that on the upper faces of both wide sides is a zoomorphic creature with its interior body containing an abstract representation of the Sun Deity. The rest of the body is dark red, with two tiny lug handles on the shoulder and a tall, slightly flared spout. Some researchers have seen echoes of architectural decoration in Huari ceramics (like the chevrons), so this may have been inspired by the walls of a temple! An item like this would have been a grave good, made to hold some kind of libation or offering. Size: 7.25" W x 8.05" H (18.4 cm x 20.4 cm)

Provenance: private Pasadena, California, USA collection; ex-private old California, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s to 1995
