Description:

Pre-Columbian, Huari/Wari culture, Peru, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. This is a carved wooden head with full lips, a protruding hook nose, inlaid black pupils in white-painted eyes, and a gauze textile and twine wrapped headdress. A head like this one would have capped a mummy bundle. Very similar items to these were found near the coast, at Pachamacac, by Max Uhle in 1896, which are now held by the Pennsylvania University Museum. They were false heads placed atop the funereal bundles of, in the case of that find, mummified children. In these bundles were jumbled skeletons; much of the mummification in this region is caused naturally by the environmental conditions. Another similar head to this one was found capping a large funereal textile bundle in 1982 under the floors of a Huari compound. Size: 4.5" L x 5.5" W x 7.5" H (11.4 cm x 14 cm x 19 cm)
