Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Wari (Huari) / Chancay, Transition period, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. An anthropomorphic mummy head / mask carved from wood with a prominent aquiline nose, diamond-shaped eyes, and deep nasolabial folds, all above a broad neck stump. Drilled attachment holes line the peripheries for securing the face to a bundle of textiles. The deceased were accompanied by offerings of ceramics, garments, featherwork, precious metals and wood, and a mask or false head was ritualistically placed over the mummy to give a face and identity to the deceased. Size: 3.25" L x 7.625" W x 13" H (8.3 cm x 19.4 cm x 33 cm); 15.1" H (38.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected in the 1950s to 1960s
