Description:

Native American, Southwestern USA, Arizona, Second Mesa, Hopi, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A hand carved wood hummingbird kachina doll, painted brightly with yarn and pheasant feather embellishments. The paper tag from the 2nd Mesa Hopi Arts & Crafts organization is labeled with the kachina name and artist's name "Harold Polingyumptewa." A red ribbon from the Arizona state fair is attached, presumably this kachina was exhibited by the artist. The hummingbird Kachina represents agility and the vital role of pollination that ensures crops flourish. In Hopi tradition, Kachinas are spirit beings that embody elements of the natural world and serve as intermediaries between humans and the divine.
