Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Hopi Pueblo, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. This hand-carved wooden kachina figure, adorned with yarn and feathers, represents the corn kachina Avachhoya. An attached paper tag from the 2nd Mesa Hopi Arts & Crafts organization identifies the artist as Joseph Gash. Avachhoya, also known as the Spotted Corn Kachina, symbolizes the growth and abundance of corn and is traditionally portrayed by young men during dances. Accompanied by a drummer and chorus, often Koyemsi (Mudhead Kachinas), the dancers gesture to represent elements like clouds or cornstalks, highlighting their role in promoting agricultural success. Size: 8.5" L x 5" W x 12.5" H (21.6 cm x 12.7 cm x 31.8 cm)
