Description:

Native American, North America, Arizona, Homolovi (Homolavi), Hopi tribe, ca. 13th to 14th century CE. A petite ceramic mug with a round but stable base, globular body, a squat neck, a slightly splayed rim, and a single applied handle joining rim to body. The upper half of the body displays a repeating series of abstract geometric motifs in black slip, with alternating triangles in upside-down and right-side-up orientations, their interiors comprised of two prongs, with each shape outlined in white pigment on an orange-red ground. The name Homolovi comes from the Hopi language meaning "Place of the Little Hills," and is the traditional Hopi name for the city of Winslow, Arizona. Size: 4.125" W x 3.125" H (10.5 cm x 7.9 cm).

  • Condition: Handle repaired from multiple small pieces with some new material and small chips along break line. Age-commensurate surface wear, small nicks to rim, body, and handle, with fading and some overpainting to pigmentation, and some darkened areas from firing. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of pigmentation throughout.
