Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi Pueblo & possibly Navajo, ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A hand-carved frog kachina and a woven wedding / rain sash. The sash is woven from cotton, the balls formed by bundled corn husks covered with the cotton threads. This type of sash / belt has several functions and names, and the style dates to at least 1200 CE, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) era. This sash was traditionally presented to a bride on her wedding day or worn by dancers, the fringe symbolizing rain. The frog kachina is perhaps Navajo made, carved from a single piece of cottonwood, and it resembles the famous Muppet character, Kermit, either on accident or on purpose -especially if it was a sale item. The iridescent feathers are likely from a rooster. Size of kachina: 11" L x 2.75" W (27.9 cm x 7 cm); sash: 78" L x 5.25" W (198.1 cm x 13.3 cm)
