Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, Justin II, ca. 565 to 578 CE. Constantinople Mint. Gold solidus. Obverse: D N IVSTI - NVS P P AVI, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Justin II facing, holding globus cruciger in his right hand and shield with his left. Reverse: VICTORIA AVGGGA / CONOB, Constantinopolis seated facing on throne, head to right, holding scepter with her right hand and globus cruciger in her left. Justin II was the nephew of Justinian the Great and Theodora. In the first few days of his reign Justin paid his uncle's debts, administered justice in person, and proclaimed universal religious toleration. His reign is marked by war with the Sassanid Empire in Persia and the loss of the greater part of Italy. DOC 4a.
