Description:

Ancient Near East/Holy Land, Iron Age, ca. 800 to 586 BCE. A head from a Judean pillar figurine representing the goddess Asherah or Astarte, a popular household item in Judea. Figurines like the one this head came from were kept as amulets to enhance fertility and offer protection during childbirth. This head displays a hairstyle resembling Egyptian wigs, with rows of curls, and sharply defined facial features. The standard history of Israel at this time is that monotheistic, patriarchal Judaism was being formulated, but it seems many people were still worshipping powerful fertility goddesses. Size: 1.55" W x 2.75" H (3.9 cm x 7 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-New York, USA private collection of D. K., acquired in 2006
