Description:

Holy Land, Hazor, ca. 1st millennium BCE. This is a buff pottery pouring vessel with a curved handle, a thick lip, and an amphora-like pointed base. This vessel is from Iron Age Hazor, which from approximately 1750 to 800 BCE was the largest fortified city in the Holy Land, with commercial ties to Syria and Babylon; it is mentioned several times in the Bible as a powerful location. In 2005, its archaeological remains were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A vessel like this one would most likely have been used for water; its shape, similar to many others from the Eastern Mediterranean, demonstrates the close commercial ties that Hazor had to other trading areas. Size: 11-1/2" H x 4" W; with stand, 12-1/2" H (29.2 cm x 10.2 cm; 31.8 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private New York Collection, ex-private F.M. collection, Germany, acquired in 1970's.
