Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Bethlehem, Israel, Byzantine Empire, ca. 500 to 900 CE. A cast leaded-bronze stamp with a circular profile and a thick loop handle on the verso. The recessed stamp face features seven raised letters as well as a small crucifix in the center. The letters are a greeting "CHARITA" which bears an affectionate connotation. This stamp was used for marking the consecrated eucharist bread and was likely owned by a Christian church, which were numerous in Bethlehem, the town of the Jesus' birth. This is a well preserved example with very clear characters and a nice patina! Size: 2.75" Diameter (7 cm)
