Description:

Ancient Near East / the Levant / Holy Land, Deir Sammit, Hebron, Late Bronze Age, ca. 1500 to 1250 BCE. A large, delicate, rounded buff clay vessel with a single loop wishbone-shaped handle projecting from just below the mouth. The exterior is decorated with geometric painted banding in dark umber slip pigments that give the impression of netting wrapped around the mouth and lower body. This lovely vessel would have been used domestically to hold hot liquids (hence the handle off to one side), and demonstrates the beauty of even utilitarian objects during this time period. Size: 9" W x 4.5" H (22.9 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private prominent D.K. collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 2000s
