Description:

Hittite period, Anatolia, 2nd to 1st century BCE. This is a gorgeous long example of a bronze sword with a low-profile ridge and a long, curled tang that would have been covered with a perishable material like bone, leather, or wood. The Hittite Empire encompassed the highland regions of north central modern-day Turkey, giving them access to the raw materials necessary to produce high quality weapons. This region consistently developed metallurgical innovation earlier than any other, exporting their knowledge of copper alloys and, later, iron working outward into the rest of the Near East. Size: 16.75" L x 2.1" W (42.5 cm x 5.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
