Description:

Turkey, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 2nd centuries BCE. Tall and finely-executed pottery statuette. Aphrodite stands holding a large cape over her shoulders her left hands pulls a corner of it over her pubis. She wears an ornate necklace/belt ensemble and leather sandals. To her right stands the young Eros, hiding in a fold of the cape, a corner of his little wings pokes out to his right side. Interestingly, this statuette has been signed by the maker in Greek with an "Alpha", obscured, "Iota." 12-3/4"H.

Provenance: Ex-private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
