Description:

Greco-Roman, Hellenistic Period, Tarentum, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. An evocative limestone carving of a warrior who seems to have fallen to his knees or back leg, a long shield raised to protect his torso and head. His body is rippling with muscle, his wild hair carefully depicted, his mouth open in despair. The straps of his scabbard are crossed at his neck. This was originally part of a relief, made of attachable individual figures - similar to the ones on the Hellenistic Tarentum necropolis. It would have been placed into a small pediment. Size: 3.8" W x 5.55" H (9.7 cm x 14.1 cm); 7.15" H (18.2 cm) on included custom stand.
