Description:

Turkey, Hellenistic Period, Ca 300 to 200 BCE. Large section of a sculpture, probably from a sarcophagus or panel. Emerging from the grayish marble is the head of a ram, with deep cut mouth, nostrils, almond-shaped eyes and a small section of its fleece just poking out at the top. 9"H x 8-1/2"L.

Provenance: Ex-private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
