Description:

Greece, Hellenistic, ca. 2nd to 1st century BCE. A mold-made terracotta vessel in the form of a child-like Dionysos, the god of wine, music, theatre, ecstatic dance, and serious partying. Here he sits in the nude, holding his hands to his head which is adorned by a fruitful, leafy vine. He looks out at the viewer with an unusually serious countenance, as if he is bearing a heavy load - indeed the contents of this vessel - with wide opened almond-shaped eyes featuring stylized pupils that rest beneath heavy lids and arched brows, a pudgy nose, naturalistic ears, and an open mouth revealing a full set of teeth. His expression is one of exertion - gritting teeth and all! Size: 10" H (25.4 cm)

Dionysos (or Dionysus) was the great Olympian god of wine, vegetation, pleasure and festivity. He was depicted as either an older bearded god or a playful, babyface youth as we see in this example. His attributes included the thyrsus (a pine-cone tipped staff), a drinking cup, a panther or leopard skin, grapes, and fruited vines.
