Description:

Greece, Hellenistic, ca. 3rd century BCE. A finely delineated, mold-made caryatid figure presenting an elegant female figure with a sensitively modeled visage featuring large almond-shaped eyes, a straight aquiline nose, and sweet, puckered lips below. Her elegant face is crowned with a wavy coiffure, and part of the superstructure she once supported. She stands in contrapposto wearing flowing garments with nicely delineated drapery folds. The caryatid form, which originated in ancient Greece, is a sculpted female kore figure that in addition to being aesthetically pleasing functioned as an architectural support replacing a standard column or pillar beneath a temple's entablature. The most famous caryatids were created for the south porch of the Erechtheion gracing the Acropolis of Athens. This example was probably used to support a miniature temple model or a vessel whose form has been left to our imaginations. Size: 3.875" H (9.8 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
