Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th century to 3rd century BCE. A delicate, thin-walled gilded bronze situla with a delicate register of incised teardrops around the rim and two charming bull heads on the curved end of each side of the handle. The body is bell-shaped, widening out to a flat base, with a very small downturned rim and two loops that rise above it, pierced for suspension. A delicate rounded handle completes the form. Size: 5" W x 4.25" H (12.7 cm x 10.8 cm)

The situla form was originally made for cooling and serving wine at banquets; others were used to hold ashes, or were buried with offerings in tombs.

  • Condition: Much of the original gilding remains. Metal is delicate because it is so thin and has several small holes from wear around its lower body and around the handles. Handle is functional. Light green patina and light encrustation on areas without gilding.
