Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 3rd centuries BCE. A cast bronze griffin (griffon, gryphon) head, with excellent detail, including incredibly-rendered eyes, a curved, almost parrot-like beak, and long, curving feathers along the sides of the neck. Comes with a custom stand. Size: 1.4" L x 0.75" W x 1.2" H (3.6 cm x 1.9 cm x 3 cm)

The griffin, a creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, was a stable of classical mythology, a chimera composed of two very noble beasts; in ancient Greece, it was a symbol of divine power. The round disc on the bottom of the neck suggests that this piece was an applique on some other object.
