North America, Hell Creek, Montana, Cretaceous Period, ca. 70 to 66.5 million years ago. A section of an ilium bone from an Edmontosaurus dinosaur. The ilium is the upper section of the pelvis that runs closest to the spine. The surface has a lovely chestnut coloration from the fossilization process. Edmontosaurus were a species of duck billed dinosaur and their name means the "lizard of Edmonton" after the capital city of the province where they were first unearthed. The impressive size of this bone exemplifies the huge body of edmontosaurus, who could be nearly 50 feet long and weight over 9 tons!
