Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture to Medieval period, ca. 8th to 13th century CE. A forged-steel axe head with a tall, curved blade bearing a sharpened edge, a sturdy neck, and a triangular socketing shaft on the back. The socketed end is for mounting this axe head on a shaft or handle, which could be replaced as needed- since this head was certainly built to last for generations. A black patina with russet areas covers the entire surface of this tool. The simplified design of this axe head suggests its use in utilitarian tasks, though the blade edge could certainly double as a battle-ready weapon. Size: 7" L x 2.5" W (17.8 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Sedona, Arizona, USA collection; ex-private German collection, acquired on the European art market
