Harry W. Brunk (American, 1934-2023). "All Ears" oil on canvas, n.d. Signed at lower left; plaque with artist name and title on frame beneath painting. A lovely painting by American artist Harry Brunk titled "All Ears" and depicting three saddled horses, standing at attention with ears raised. Presenting a black coat with a white stripe down the snout, the front-most horse looks off into the distance, his bridle tied to a dead branch that lays at his feet, the torn bough shown on the tree behind him suggesting he has ripped it off in a moment of fervor. A pair of auburn-colored horses stand behind, one gazing at the black horse, while the other looks further away. All is rendered in liberal, open brushstrokes that skillfully portray a rich variation of light and texture. All set in a custom wooden frame with a suspension wire on verso for easy display. Size of painting: 23.25" W x 19.25" H (59.1 cm x 48.9 cm); of frame: 31.6" W x 27.6" H (80.3 cm x 70.1 cm)
About the artist: "Harry was born in a small town on the fringes of Nebraska ranching country in 1941. Some of his earliest memories are of watching the branding and riding horses in and around his Grandfather's stock yards. Both his Great-Grandfather and Grandfather had been cattlemen and livestock auctioneers. Harry's father had worked outfits from Nebraska to Montana and back again, and his warm memories had a strong influence on young Harry.
While growing up in Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas and South Dakota, Harry showed an early ability to draw, encouraged by many of his teachers. "I was always. drawing and I think some of my teachers thought that was the only hope for me," Harry relates. Art school followed, giving him the basics in commercial art, and laying the groundwork for self-study and improvement that continues to this day.
A two year hitch in the Army stationed him in Oklahoma, where he was able to visit The Cowboy Hall of Fame several times and renew his acquaintance with the works of Charlie Russell. "C.M. Russell is The Old Master of cowboy painting, of course," comments Harry, "and his paintings have influenced me greatly." Harry also greatly admires the work of the late George Phippen and contemporary Tom Ryan, always striving for their level of perfection.
After nearly 14 years as a commercial artist, Harry and his wife, Bobbie, decided the time had come to make the break. Now he devotes full time to the subject near to his heart-the cattle, horses and the men who work them.
Always when time permits, Harry and Bobbie "pack up and head west" ranging from Montana to Texas on observation expeditions.
Harry brings to his paintings his constant observation and active "saddle participation" giving them the authentic feel that is gaining him growing recognition among galleries and collectors everywhere." (from artist's flyer that accompanies piece)
