Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Veracruz, ca. 100 BCE to 800 CE. A handmade pottery flat standing warrior figure - or possibly a ball player wearing a yoke - with outraised arms and spread legs. The figure might be a woman - it is unclear. He or she wears a skirt decorated with the classic Veracruz thick black pigment, chapapote, that is common to Veracruz artwork and is made from petroleum-rich deposits. Chapapote is also smeared around the figure's mouth. Size: 4.25" W x 5.75" H (10.8 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Peter Arnovick collection, San Francisco, CA
