Bonnie Halsey-Dutton (American, Contemporary). "Within the Fabric" watercolor and gouache on paper, 2012. Signed and dated in lower right and on verso with title. An impressive painting by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton that pays homage to the relentless strength of indigenous peoples as tribes were forcibly relocated to reservations as well as the longstanding native practice of recording historical narratives, first on rock walls and later on animal hides and fabrics. This composition features a thunderbird - a traditional animal in Plains Indian culture - painted atop the striped and dotted canvas of a tipi. This juxtaposition of a longstanding symbol on a relatively newly adapted material - canvas - demonstrates the themes of endurance and transformation in Native existence. Size of painting: 11" W x 18" H (27.9 cm x 45.7 cm) Size of shadowbox: 15.5" W x 22.5" H x 2.75" Depth (39.4 cm x 57.2 cm x 7 cm)

All is delineated in Halsey-Dutton's lively manner and uniquely floated upon a backdrop that the artist faux-painted to resemble animal hide in a deep acrylic shadowbox frame. Halsey-Dutton has used shadowbox framing to underscore the cultural importance of the theme and suggest a treasured museum artifact. This piece is painted on heavy-weight archival watercolor paper, and the manner of paint application was intended to convey age and weathering. In addition, the paper's deckled edge further imbues the piece with a sense of history.

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton was born and raised in South Dakota and is inspired by the local cultures where she resides as well as their history. Providing further context for this piece she writes, "Once someone has visited my home, I can feel their presence there ever-after. It leaves a mark on the very fabric of my life and my home. / This painting represents the impact of presence and of change. The Plains Native American culture was forced into change. The animal which provided everything, the bison, was pushed to near extinction. This impacted not only diet, but also the clothing worn, and the material from which dwellings were constructed. Regardless, this canvas tipi represents the presence of culture holding firm. Tipis began to be made of canvas, and although forced onto reservations, the people persisted. The Thunderbird is a symbolic form in Plains Indian culture. The strength and tradition that this represents remains within the fabric of this rich culture."
