Description:

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton (American, Contemporary). "Story Inside a Sioux Teepee" oil on canvas, 2004. Signed at bottom right. A mesmerizing oil painting by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton that pays homage to the stories the Sioux told within their teepees. The composition features wild horses and warriors on horseback moving across the interior walls of a teepee delineated in Halsey-Dutton's lyrical manner with a rich color palette. In the artist's words, "The texture and converging lines of a buffalo hide teepee was inspiration for this painting. Besides the communal living a teepee required, I was captivated by the thought of how time was spent in this dwelling. Long cold Dakota nights were endured in such a teepee, during which were the telling of cherished stories that were passed down from one generation to another." Size (painting): 20" L x 16" W (50.8 cm x 40.6 cm) Size (frame): 24.25" L x 20" W (61.6 cm x 50.8 cm)

Halsey-Dutton continued, "In this painting, I symbolically added images from Plains Indians winter counts and juxtaposed them into the heights of the teepee. This is done to honor the narrative manner in which culture was passed along from one generation to another before recorded history."
