Description:

Ancient Central Europe, Germany and Austria, Hallstatt culture, 6th century BCE. A beautiful leaded bronze torc (also torque and torq) with curled ends and incised decoration. The open ring narrows from the curled termini to the center, and the exterior surface is decorated with etched bullseye circles and herringbone patterns. Interestingly torcs were often worn as permanent adornments and status symbols- rarely taken off by the wearer. An attractive form imbued with a lovely green and russet patina that has developed over the ages. Size: 5.5" Diameter (14 cm); the torc measures 1.25" at the highest point (3.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Elder Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
