Description:

Pacific Northwest of North America, North Coast art style, Haida, Tlingit, or Tsimshian cultures, ca. 1750 to 1850 CE. This is a bone or whale ivory effigy figure done in the traditional North Coast art style, with a "flat design" subtly sculpted, almost bas-relief style that will be familiar to fans of Pacific Northwestern art. The figure is a human, crouched, with hands around its knees; it has been drilled at the top for suspension. This may have been a small "totem" like object, carried by an individual, but there is very little wear to it. The oldest forms of these cultures' art have been found in cave sites and near remote shaman graves. This piece was previously part of the Queen Charlotte Islands Museum (which has since been renamed the Haida Gwaii/Haida Heritage Centre) in British Columbia. Size: 1.65" W x 2.5" H (4.2 cm x 6.4 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Private M. Reiniger collection, Chicago, IL; ex-Queen Charlotte Islands Museum
