**First Time At Auction**

Glen Pollard (First Nations / Canadian, Haida, b. 1957). "Haida Killer Whale" argillite sculpture with inlaid walrus ivory, n.d. Signed with title on underside of base. A beautiful argillite plaque titled "Haida Killer Whale" by Glen Pollard depicting the fierce image of a whale with an inlaid eye of walrus ivory. Glen Pollard is a First Nations artist and part of the Haida Gwaii village on Tanu Islands. He began carving as teenager in the 1970s and is mostly self-taught. He is an argillite master carver, usually collecting the stone himself. He gathers his material from the only source of this kind of argillite - Slatechuck Mountain - a secluded place near his home in Skidegate. It is time-consuming and difficult work gathering stones and packing them out. Only the Haida people are permitted to use this argillite. Glen is renowned for his inlay work, as seen in this example, which also highlights his use of minimalist motifs, finely executed with elegant form lines. Size: 1.8" L x 5.25" W x 6.25" H (4.6 cm x 13.3 cm x 15.9 cm)

Argillite is a fine-grained sedimentary rock that is typically black in color and lustrous once polished; it often has an impressively smooth appearance. In the 19th century, the Haida people began to carve this material as a trade good for visiting Europeans and Americans, because of the decline of their traditional economic practice of fishing.
