Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero/Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A skillfully executed seated monkey figurine, finely carved from a beautiful greenstone of sage and blue-green hues. The endearing simian creature presents an abstract visage with a pronounced forehead, straight nose, and a slightly, open, perhaps smiling slit mouth, a playful pose with abstract hands meeting across the chest, upraised knees, and a long, erect tail. The piece demonstrates the Mezcala artisan's command of string-cut techniques resulting in marvelously abstract forms that appeal to contemporary sensibilities! Perforated at bottom. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: 2.75" H (7 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) with stand

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois USA, acquired prior to 1970.
