Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero/Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A skillfully executed monkey amulet, finely carved from a beautiful greenstone with a spiraling tail forming the petite suspension loop. Seated in a playful pose with upraised knees and hands meeting atop his bulging belly, the endearing simian presents a stylized visage of a pronounced forehead, drilled eyes, a round nose, and an incised mouth. The piece demonstrates the Mezcala artisan's command of string-cut techniques resulting in marvelously abstract forms that appeal to contemporary sensibilities! Size: 1.6" W x 1.8" H (4.1 cm x 4.6 cm)

Provenance: private Golden, Colorado, USA collection, by descent, acquired in Mexico before 1970
