Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A head pendant or maskette hand-carved from a mottled white stone, possibly an M-12 type, but some features are too faint to properly observe. The simple face has a rounded nasal ridge, indentations for slit eyes, and a pair of tab-like ears flank the sides; a drilled suspension hole is set in the upper brow. Size: 5" L x 3.25" W (12.7 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

  • Condition: Abrasions and stable fissure across the surface, and old gouge to verso near suspension hole. Weathering and softening to facial details, eyes are nearly indiscernible. Overall good condition with signs of age and exposure to elements.
