Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 200 BCE. A fine example of an abstract anthropomorphic figure that is hand-carved from mottled green-brown stone with light brown and cream-hued inclusions. The schematized figure stands atop a pair of attenuated legs and has a string-cut groove delineating the waistline. Stocky arms hang on either side of the triangular chest and drape down from shoulders flush with the corseted neck. The bulbous head features one contiguous 'eye' above a crescent-shaped mouth, and the brow tapers upwards to form an almost acute angle. Though slightly pitted, the surfaces exhibit an incredibly smooth texture indicative of being rigorously polished. Size: 2.75" W x 7.8" H (7 cm x 19.8 cm); 8.1" H (20.6 cm) on included custom stand.
