Description:

Originally offered at $400...

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A stone axe god of a highly abstract style, the humanoid details rendered to the most minimal of forms. Aptly placed string-cut lines and grooves delineate the legs, arms, head, and mouth. The surface is a dark gray mottled with beige and white inclusions. Figures like this one are deemed as 'axe gods' based on scholars' suppositions that they were carved from repurposed stone axe heads that had been damaged or otherwise unusable. Size: 2.2" L x 1" W x 5.5" H (5.6 cm x 2.5 cm x 14 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.
