Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 200 BCE. A splendid stone axe god figure - so called because scholars posit they were created from discarded or otherwise unusable stone axe heads - boasting an elegantly minimalist form with both the top of the head and the bottom of the legs narrowing to slender blade edges. The abstract figure bears shallow, string-cut grooves that comprise the arms, legs, neck, and nose. Size: 3.9" W x 7.9" H (9.9 cm x 20.1 cm); 8.7" H (22.1 cm) on included custom stand.
