Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A lovely abstract human face maskette pendant, hand-carved from mottled emerald-green stone with light and dark inclusions. The ovoid pendant has a tapered chin, rounded cheeks, and string-cut grooves delineating the eyes, nose, lips, and nasolabial folds. The maskette is contained within a modern 18K gold setting with four curved prongs, a thick backing, and a slender suspension loop on top. A beautiful statement piece! Size (maskette): 1.25" W x 1.75" H (3.2 cm x 4.4 cm); quality of gold: 18K.
