Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. An interesting and expressive example of an abstract anthropomorphic mask that is hand-carved from greenstone of grassy hues with forest green, pistachio, verdant, khaki, and soft citrine hues. The spade-shaped composition features a broad, rounded chin beneath a pecked mouth, a bulbous nose, a pair of recessed almond-shaped eyes, and a furrowed brow, all beneath a petite, peaked forehead. The recessed verso and lack of eyeholes perhaps indicates that this mask was intended for wear by a deceased individual as a funerary offering. Size: 4.8" W x 5.9" H (12.2 cm x 15 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
