Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A fine necklace strung with 7 large and 14 petite beads carved from mottled greenstone of both light and dark green hues. The 7 larger beads are of bulbous cylindrical forms perhaps used as snuff tubes at one time, and the smaller beads exhibit smooth, spherical forms. Linear decorations are deeply incised across each of the large beads and create a textured feel with a unique presentation. Size (necklace): 32.75" L (83.2 cm); (largest bead): 3.5" L x 0.9" W (8.9 cm x 2.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Roberto Austin collection; ex-Claude Cassuto collection, France, acquired before 1969

  • Condition: Greenstone beads are ancient, and stringing is modern. Wearable as shown. Expected nicks and abrasions to most beads commensurate with age, with light encrustations within some incised details, otherwise intact and very good. Great surface smoothness throughout. Old inventory label on one larger bead.
