Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A hefty example of a hand-carved brownstone axe god figure standing atop thick, delineated legs. Presenting in hues of taupe, caramel, ochre, and citrine, the abstract figure has angular shoulders, holds both arms to wide hips, and has a deep string-cut neckline. The enlarged head bears plateaued brows, diagonally slanted ears, a slender mouth, and a gently rounded top. Figures like this one are deemed as 'axe gods' based on scholars' suppositions that they were carved from repurposed stone axe heads that had been damaged or otherwise unusable. Size: 2" W x 4.9" H (5.1 cm x 12.4 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Meza Family collection, Whittier, California, USA, acquired in the 1960s; ex-Fernandez Family collection, via descent from his grandfather, Dr. R. Fernandez MD, 1940s
