Mexico, Guerrero, early 20th to mid-20th century CE. This is a wooden carved mask of a woman's face, Malinche, a Nahua woman who lived at the time of the Spanish conquest and has been mythologized - she was the interpreter, advisor, and lover of Herman Cortes. She is often compared with the Virgin Mary or La Llorona, the woman weeping for her lost children, and is an important figure in Mexican folk art. Here she is depicted with green eyes, rosy cheeks, and long, wavy black hair. Size: 7.75" W x 13.75" H (19.7 cm x 34.9 cm)
