Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste, ca. 1000 CE. A hand-built and skillfully modeled terracotta tripod vessel of a form sometimes referred to as a spider-leg vessel depicting a jaguar with limbs, paws, an expressive wild feline visage, and a long tail all delineated in low to high relief and a bullet-shaped vessel body rising to a flared rim. The form of the jaguar was revered throughout the Pre-Columbian New World as the mightiest wild feline and was used as a symbol of power and kingship. Size: 4.375" W at widest point x 6.125" H (11.1 cm x 15.6 cm)
