Description:

Greece, ca. 3rd century BCE.   Seven round appliques, all in high karat gold, done in repousse depicting, in profile, the head of Alexander the Great. Four equally spaced holes around the perimeter for attachment.  Size:  Each about 1/2" in diameter.  Displayed in a black velvet display box. For similar, see Ancient Greek and Roman Gold Jewelry In The Brooklyn Museum, by Patricia F. Davidson and Andrew Oliver Jr., #'s 225-237. A similar pair of Hellenistic appliques or buttons were sold at the Christies Jewelry auction, in December, 2006, Lot # 241, inserted as a central element in modern gold earrings.  Provenance: Ex-private NYC, NY collection.
