Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine group of 5 hand-built pottery figures from ancient West Mexico. First is a petite seated figure with bulging eyes and lips as well as a red-painted upper body. Next is a pair of standing female figurines, each with enormous breasts, outstretched arms, portly bellies, and elongated heads bearing large noses. Next is a standing, cape-wearing "sheepface" figure, so called due to the pointed ears, slanted eyes, and outstretched nose. The largest female figure stands nude and exhibits conical arms, incised striations around her pubis, and a tall head with a centrally parted coiffure and a fragmentary head band. Size of largest: 3.625" W x 6.625" H (9.2 cm x 16.8 cm); 6.875" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Sheepface figure has repairs to both lateral fringes of cape, and larger figure repaired from roughly 5 or 6 large pieces, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Seated figurine has loss to nose, back of head, and posterior; remaining 2 figures are intact and very good. Each figure has light abrasions and encrustations, softening to some finer details, fading to original pigment, and nicks to limbs, heads, and peripheries. Great preservation to overall forms.
