Description:

Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A collection of gorgeous bronze buttons. Twelve are solid cast bronze; one is comprised of twisted bronze wire with a red, blue, and white glass bead; one is cast bronze with a clear glass inlay in the form of a flower; six are bronze with inlaid enamel; one is a brown-red stone, and one is silver. Each bead is unique, with incised and/or colorful abstract motifs. Finely decorated clothing was a sign of wealth in the Viking period, and buttons like these were used to fasten them tightly to protect against the cold, wet weather that was typical in the North Atlantic and Scandinavia.
