Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, Xenon, ca. 4th century BCE. A fine wheel-thrown ceramic plate on a raised foot, the interior bowl adorned from rim to tondo with repeating registers of fretted, serpentine, and chevron registers, all surrounding an "M" and an "N" in the tondo. The motifs are presented using a fugitive salmon-pink pigment atop a black-glazed ground, and the glaze has formed sumptuous layers of silvery iridescence. Size: 6.125" Diameter x 1.25" H (15.6 cm x 3.2 cm).
