Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A delicate ceramic plate with sloping, shallow sides, a narrow, flattened rim, and a short, round concave foot. The interior body is decorated in the Xenon style with added matt red stylized line, wave, and "v" motifs over the glossy black glaze. In tondo are two "double v" symbols in the same matt red. The black has attained a silvery iridescence. Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matt red decoration over black glaze. A beautiful example in wonderful condition. Size: 6.2" W x 1.25" H (15.7 cm x 3.2 cm)
