Description:

Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. This is a shallow handled vessel with a rich black glaze, sitting upon a disc foot. There is an applied peach-colored design of laurel leaves encircling a swan to the tondo, the shallow interior of the bowl. The artwork of the swan is particularly fine, with sweeps of the brush suggesting the broad shape of the wings. In Greek-influenced southern Italy, the swan as a symbol of Zeus was probably well known. Xenon ware, named after a vase inscribed with the name Xenon, is distinguished by its added matte reddish decoration over black glaze; these pieces are often smaller, and may have been votives or even toys. This piece is in the shape of a kylix, a drinking vessel probably used for wine. Size: 8-3/4" W x 2" H (22.2 cm x 5 cm).
