Description:

Greece, Thrace, ca. 5th century BCE. This is a cast bronze Thracian piece of currency in the shape of a dolphin. In the town of Olbia, in modern day Ukraine, people cast these objects first for the symbolic worship of Apollo and later for use as coinage. These were undoubtedly based on the bottlenose dolphins who continue to live in the Black Sea today. This example has a clear dorsal fin. Size: 1" W (2.5 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Poolos collection, Chicago, IL collected before 1980
