Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 2nd century BCE. A terracotta mold used to create pottery statues of the back half of a male god, likely Apollo, standing in contrapposto upon an integral pedestal, in the nude save a short cloak draped over his shoulder. Apollo was one of the most important of the Olympian deities in the Classical pantheon. The youthful god of music, the sun, light, poetry, prophesy, healing as well as the brother to our namesake goddess, the huntress Artemis, he is fittingly depicted in an idealized manner. Upon close examination one can appreciate the balanced, harmonious proportions of his body as delineated by the Polykleitan Canon. A wonderful piece, designed to create votive statues dedicated to this god. Size: 1.9" W x 3.5" H (4.8 cm x 8.9 cm)

CF: a similar mold for Herakles in B.M. Kingsley. The Terracottas of the Tarantine Greeks (Getty Museum, Malibu 1976) pl. 22.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; acquired from Charles Ede catalogue 187, lot 65; ex collection of Louis-Gabriel Bellon (1819-1899)
